Take a peek . . . . . . . . . . . Book 4
Come!  Let’s go to Children’s Church one more time and see how God is touching precious lives.
It is Palm Sunday and we are just in time for a parade.  But wait!  Why is Jesus crying?  The children have tissues to dry Jesus’ tears.  Clocks are ticking as a reminder that the best time of all is the time we spend with Jesus.  The children are learning how to forgive others as they sport their newly made coats of many colors.  Even though Jesus’ feet are bigger, the children can be heard praying, asking Jesus to help them walk in His shoes and tell others about God’s love.  Two puppets, Mr. Para and Mr. Bull, drop by to share their stories of hurricanes, small barns and too much loot.  But the best parable of all is about the invitation.  All the children are going to a banquet that the Lord has prepared in their honor.  Come with us as we experience God’s love and grace.  You will be glad you did.
Here is an example of a Lesson from Book 4.
Too Much Loot, Not Enough Barn
The Parable of the Rich Fool
Item:  Hammer, nail, piece of wood, small lunch sack full of various items (See craft list)
Scripture:  Luke 12:16-18, 21  (LB)  “A rich man had a fertile farm that produced fine crops.  In fact, his barns were full to overflowing - he could not get everything in.  He thought about his problem, and finally exclaimed, ‘I know - I’ll tear down my barns and build bigger ones!’  “Yes, every man is a fool who gets rich on earth but not in heaven.”
NOTE: Have the stage set and ready before class.
As the children are coming to hear the sermon, have Mr. Bull and his sack behind your back.  When the children are seated, Mr. Bull appears from behind your back struggling to pull his big sack of “stuff.”
Teacher:  Mr. Bull, what are you doing?
Mr. Bull: (Panting and out of breath) I don’t have time to talk.  I was supposed to meet Mr. Para at six o’clock this morning and I am terribly late.  Mr. Para is going to help me build a new barn.  I’ve got to go!  No time to talk!  (Mr. Bull and bag disappear behind your back.)
Teacher: Wow!  I wonder why Mr. Bull wants to build a new barn.  I hope he does not build his barn on the sand like he built his house!  Do you remember what happened to Mr. Bull’s house last week? (Let the children respond.)  Let’s find our friends and see what they are going to teach us about today.
As the skit begins, Mr. Para is holding the nail and Mr. Bull is hammering it into the piece of wood.  Mr. Bull’s sack of “stuff” is laying beside them with items falling out of the sack.
Mr. Para:  Mr. Bull, I just do not understand.  Why do you need to build a bigger barn?  The barn you have now is huge!
Mr. Bull:  Oh no, Mr. Para!  I have lots and lots more I could put in my barn.  And besides, if I had a bigger barn, I could have more and more and more and…(Mr. Para interrupts.)
Mr. Para:  Mr. Bull, why do you want more and more “stuff?”  You have so much “stuff” already.
Mr. Bull:  Well Mr. Para, the way I see it, once I get all my “stuff” in my giant size barn, I can just sit back and take it easy.  Me, me, me, that’s all I want to think about!
Mr. Para:  Mr. Bull, have you ever thought about what God might want you to do with all of your “stuff?”
Mr. Bull: (Mr. Bull is beginning to get aggravated with Mr. Para’s comments.)  Of course not!  I have worked hard for what I have and I am going to do exactly what I want to do with all of my “stuff!”
Mr. Bull storms off the stage and Mr. Para just shakes his head.
Teacher:  Do you think Mr. Bull can ever be happy if he thinks only of himself?  (Talk about sharing.  Emphasize to the children that what we do for others is the same as doing it for God.)  Do you remember last week, Mr. Para was studying his Bible so he would know how God wants him to live?  Mr. Bull said he was going to live exactly as he pleased.  All of Mr. Bull’s treasures are here on earth.  Mr. Bull has nothing to give to God.  Let us pray.
(Have the children repeat the prayer after you.)
Prayer:  Father, this parable is so important for us to understand.  We can never be happy if the “stuff” we have means more to us than You.  Amen.
